Renowned Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia dies at 66

Image
Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia plays a guitar during a rehearsal of closing concert of the Biennial of Flamenco in the Andalusian capital of Seville October 9, 2010. CREDIT: REUTERS/MARCELO DEL POZO Paco de Lucia, the influential Spanish guitarist who vastly expanded the international audience for flamenco and merged it with other musical styles, died suddenly on Wednesday of a heart attack in Mexico. The 66-year-old virtuoso, as happy playing seemingly impossible syncopated flamenco rhythms as he was improvising jazz or classical guitar, helped to legitimize flamenco in Spain itself at a time when it was shunned by the mainstream. "I learned the guitar like a child learns to speak," the guitarist said in a 2012 documentary. Born Francisco Sanchez Gomez, he became famous in the 1970s after recording bestselling album "Entre Dos Aguas", becoming the first flamenco musician to perform at Madrid's op...

Daylight Dies – A Frail Becoming Review

Image
How can you not love melodic doom-death. It has melody, doom AND death! What could be better? Coming hot on the  heels of the latest from  Hooded Menace , we get more melodic, doomy and downcast music from  Daylight Dies .  A Frail Becoming  is the fourth album full of gloom and despair from these North Carolina masters of melancholy. Unlike the doom-death acts moving in the direction of funeral dirge,  Daylight Dies  has always kept things more melodic, accessible and light (in the context of depressive doom-death, anyway). Throughout their career, elements of  October Tide ,  Katatonia  and  Insomnium  found their way into the mix. All can still be found on  A Frail Becoming , but the sound here is much more clearly a mix of Ghost Brigade  and  Rapture , with a healthy dose of post-rock style and sensibility.  Never a crushingly heavy band,  Daylight Dies  often...

Josh has confirmed that it will not be any part of the, yet untitled, upcoming 2011 album.  Josh’s music ranges from massive walls of aggressive onslaughts, to calm and serene acoustic and jazz detours. Focus biography

Image
Focus biography Of all the groups in the 1970s that combined elements of rock and classical music, FOCUS is, without a doubt, the most notable Dutch group widely known outside the Netherlands. This band has created excitement all over the world during the past few years with their unique sound and musical approach. The two main musicians in the band were flutist/keyboardist/singer Thjis Van LEER and guitarist Jan AKKERMAN. They played a stylishly inventive rock with flutes, keyboards & dazzling guitar, defining the Dutch prog sound. An inspiration to FINCH, TRACE & numerous others. In 1978, the group finally split up, without making too much noise. Best albums are "Moving Waves" (1972), "3" (1973), "Live at the Rainbow" (1973), and "Hamburger Concerto" (1974). "Waves" and "3" represent the best of the band's earlier intensely progressive period with plenty of sidelong tracks and healthly extended solos. Most wi...

PSYCHEDELIC/SPACE ROCK

Image
Psychedelic/Space Rock definition Psychedelic Progressive Rock Progressive rock music has its roots in the mid 1960's psychedelic cultural phenomena. During that time the British Invasion and folk-rock bands began to expand the sonic possibilities of their music. These groups slowly started to abandon the concise verse-chorus-verse patterns of rock & roll, and moved towards fluid, free-form oriented song structures. Just as important was the incorporation of elements from Indian and Eastern music. Along them the principles of free-form jazz were included to the psychedelic sound, emphasising spontaneous emotions over calculated and estimated compositional constructions. Experimenting with new studio technology, electronically altering instruments and voices, was a part of this altered approach as well. Acid rock groups like THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE and CREAM stand as descriptive and popular examples of the path from psychedelic sunshine pop towards a more aggressive and ...
