How to Read a Book

Read a Book
Books can be a best friend. They can take you to places that you may never see. They can introduce you to things you may never know... But do you know how to read them in order to get the fullest enjoyment possible? This should help.

EditSteps

  1. 1
    Find a book.
     Find a book.
Find a book. Look in the library or in one of the larger bookstores. You could also ask friends if you could check out their book shelves. Search the shelves until you find a book that looks good. Read the first page to see how it reads, and the cover text at the back of the book if it has any. If you find yourself already engrossed, then buy it or check it out.

  2. 2
Buy/rent it and take it home. Do not start to read it, until you have the time. If you have to rush reading, because you have to do homework, or prepare dinner, it is best to wait until you are done. Set aside time to do nothing else but read, as it can be at times suspenseful, exciting and relaxing.
  3. 3
Settle into a comfortable chair or get comfortable on the couch.

Settle into a comfortable chair or get comfortable on the couch. Have a lamp on the back of you, lighting the area where you are reading. So that you do not have to get up soon after starting to read, make sure you have brought coffee, candy, popcorn, or any other refreshments you might want to have. Make sure the television is off and anything that could distract you is attended to. Take the phone off the hook, put earplugs in or ear defenders on. Get warm if you're going to be sitting still for a few hours.
  4. 4
Be calm and alert. You should be alert and your mind should be calm before you begin to read. Otherwise, your mind will wander.
  5. 5
Start the book by turning the pages.

Start the book by turning the pages. Do not think about anything else, but what you're reading. Put yourself into the action or location within the story. Once you get totally engrossed, it will be difficult to put the book down.
  6. 6
    Read and really enjoy it.

Read and really enjoy it . Reading is not running your eyes over a book. Read it actively and enjoy it completely. However, if you need to, read out the book fast, then you do not need to pay attention to every word.

EditTips

  • When you start a book, and find you are not getting interested, read a few more pages. If you still feel bored by the storyline, put it away, and find a more engrossing book.
  • Explore the various genres of books. Finding a genre can be important because the ones you like are the ones that have a higher probability of grabbing your attention. Here are a few popular genres:
    • Fiction/Literature
    • Science Fiction
    • Fantasy
    • Mystery/Suspense
    • Non-Fiction
    • History
    • Biography
  • Read when you are in the right mood. If you are hyper, angry or too worried to concentrate you either will not get too far or forget what you read.
  • Join a local library. You can order books as they are released by your favorite author. Save money by not buying books. Return the book after you have finished, and find another book.
  • It might be hard to get into a book at first, and you might be tempted to give up and read another book. If you think the book is worth reading, keep trying and continue reading to get into the book. Some books have better starts than others, but this doesn't make the whole book better.
  • They have audio books to read while driving in the car. For long trips this can be great.
  • Try to imagine the story in your head.
  • If you're borrowing a book from your school's library, then keep it in your backpack every night after you read it so you won't forget to give it back when you're done with it.
  • Note that if you find your eyes closing, or if you feel tired, then place a bookmark into the page, shut the book and place it in a safe place. When tired, the mind wanders, and you will no longer enjoy or retain what you are reading.
  • In speed reading, what most people do is they try to eliminate the voice you hear in your head. Hearing that voice is called "sub-vocalization." If you need to read fast, try to keep that going fast. If speed reading, eliminate it entirely. If you've got time to fritter away, it is recommended you keep it, because it really helps to let the words sink in.
  • If you need to read it fast or just want to have something to do when going by subway or bus, then bring the book and read it there.
  • The more quiet the place where you read is, the easier it is to read. However, good concentration makes it easier to read in a loud place.
  • Sometimes, when reading books that are complex, it can be difficult to understand the actual meaning of what you have just read. This can make the book boring for you and you can get lost at times, so if you are reading a book like this, go back and read the parts that confuse you again and you may actually start to like the book! But at the same time, don't refer to dictionary so often that it spoils your reading interest; it would be better if you assume the meaning.
  • It sometimes can be tempting to want to remember everything you read at one go. Realise that it did not take overnight to produce a writing piece. So divide the book into sections and digest in bits. Spend few minutes each day consistently.
  • Extract phrases, words, characters, etc. so that you can cross reference later instead of getting distracted with your current reading.

EditWarnings

  • Do not forget about your daily life. Check the time and take a break every once in a while.
  • If the book is rented or borrowed, then be very careful to not damage it, and return it on time.
  • You will pay for lateness, and that is definitely not fun at all.
  • If you read the book in a bus/subway, then be careful to not miss the station where you should go off.
  • If the book seems boring at first, don't stop. It can take a while for a book to draw you in. Read at least a fifth of the book before making that decision.
